This High Protein High Fibre Breakfast Smoothie is made with chocolate protein powder, banana, Skyr and oats for a filling breakfast ready in just 5 minutes.

This High Protein High Fibre Breakfast Smoothie combines chocolate protein powder, ripe banana, Skyr, oats, cocoa, chia seeds and flaxseed for a thick, creamy drink with a rich chocolate flavour and natural sweetness.
Despite being a massive serving containing 43g of protein and around 16g of fibre—over half of the recommended daily fibre intake for most adults—this High Protein High Fibre Breakfast Smoothie contains fewer than 400 calories. It’s a satisfying breakfast that’s designed to keep you feeling full and energised until lunchtime.
During the summer, I often find it harder to eat a big breakfast, especially after an early workout when the heat takes away my appetite. I find it much easier to drink than eat a large meal, and I find a breakfast smoothie the best way to get all my morning nutrient needs. I usually keep frozen bananas on hand, so I can blend up this make ahead high protein breakfast smoothie in just a few minutes before getting on with the day.
Ingredients

Skyr
Skyr adds a thick, creamy texture and a substantial amount of protein with very little fat. Greek yogurt can be used instead if that’s what you have available, but it will reduce the protein content and add calories
Soy Milk
Unsweetened soy milk provides the liquid base while adding extra protein and a mild, creamy flavour. Almond or dairy milk will also work, but they will change the protein and calorie content.
Chocolate Protein Powder
Chocolate protein powder provides most of the protein while giving the smoothie its rich chocolate flavour. Use your preferred whey or plant-based protein powder (I find pea the best as soy can get very very thick)
Banana
Banana naturally sweetens the smoothie and creates a smooth, creamy consistency. Frozen banana makes the finished smoothie even thicker and colder, sort of like an ice cream milkshake.
Chia Seeds
Chia seeds increase the fibre content and help thicken the smoothie as they absorb liquid. If preparing the smoothie ahead of time, expect it to become slightly thicker overnight.
Ground Flaxseed
Ground flaxseed contributes fibre, healthy fats and a subtle nutty flavour. Freshly ground flaxseed provides the best flavour and nutritional value.
Unsweetened Cocoa Powder
Cocoa powder deepens the chocolate flavour without adding extra sugar. Use good-quality unsweetened cocoa for the richest taste.
Step by Step Instructions
Add the Ingredients
Pour the soy milk into the blender first, then add the chocolate protein powder, oats, cocoa powder, chia seeds, flaxseed, cinnamon, and banana. Finish by spooning the Skyr on top.
I find this layering works best because the milk helps the blades get moving, while the yogurt sits on top and helps push the dry ingredients down into the liquid as everything blends. It also reduces the amount of protein powder and cocoa that sticks to the sides of the blender.
Blend Until Smooth
Secure the lid and blend on high for 45–60 seconds. The smoothie is ready when it’s thick, creamy and completely smooth, with no visible oat flakes or pockets of protein powder.
If needed, stop once to scrape down the sides of the blender, then blend for another 10–15 seconds.
For a thinner smoothie, add a splash of soy milk and blend again. If you’d like it colder and thicker, add a handful of ice before blending
Pour into a large glass and enjoy immediately. Alternatively, store it in a sealed bottle or jar in the fridge for up to 24 hours. Add a little more milk and give iit a good shake before drinking, as the oats, chia seeds and flaxseed will naturally thicken the smoothie overnight.

Can I Make This High Protein High Fibre Breakfast Smoothie in Advance?
This smoothie keeps well in the fridge for up to 24 hours, making it a great option for busy mornings or post-workout breakfasts.
Because it’s packed with oats, chia seeds and ground flaxseed, it will naturally thicken overnight as the ingredients absorb the liquid. Before drinking, give it a good shake and add a splash of milk if you’d like a thinner consistency.
Alternatively, pour it into a bowl and enjoy it like a smoothie bowl, topped with chopped fresh fruit, a spoonful of peanut butter, and any extra seeds or nuts you have on hand.

Notes
Variations and Substitutions
If you prefer a different flavour, swap the chocolate protein powder and cocoa for vanilla protein powder and add a pinch of nutmeg or extra cinnamon for a lighter, spiced smoothie. Fresh or frozen berries also work well, adding a slightly tart flavour that balances the sweetness of the banana. For a richer smoothie, replace half the banana with a tablespoon of natural peanut or almond butter. If you enjoy coffee, add a shot of chilled espresso for a mocha-style breakfast smoothie. If you don’t have Skyr, plain Greek yogurt is the closest substitute and produces a very similar texture. Whole flaxseeds can be used instead of ground flaxseed, but grinding them first improves both the texture and nutrient absorption. This recipe is naturally vegetarian. It can easily be made vegan by using a plant-based protein powder and dairy-free high-protein yogurt in place of the Skyr. To make it gluten-free, simply use certified gluten-free rolled oats.Yes. Almond, oat, dairy or any other milk will work, although the flavour and nutritional values will change. Soy milk is a good choice if you want to keep the protein content high.
Yes. Plain Greek yogurt is the closest substitute and gives a similar creamy texture with plenty of protein. For a dairy-free version, use a thick plant-based yogurt, although the protein content will usually be lower.
The oats, chia seeds and ground flaxseed continue absorbing liquid after blending, so the smoothie naturally thickens as it sits. Add a splash of milk and shake or blend again until it reaches your preferred consistency.
A little extra Skyr or half a scoop of additional protein powder are the easiest ways to boost the protein content. Bear in mind that both will make the smoothie thicker, so you may also need to add a little more milk.
Absolutely. Use a frozen banana or reduce the milk slightly before blending to create a thicker consistency. Finish with sliced banana, fresh berries, chopped nuts, seeds or a spoonful of peanut butter for extra texture and flavour.
