Ingredients

  • 200 g oat groats rinsed
  • 550 ml water
  • 200 ml milk dairy or plant-based
  • ½ tsp sea salt
  • ½ tsp ground cinnamon optional
  • 2 tbsp chia seeds
  • 150 g berries fresh or frozen

Optional Toppings

  • chopped nuts
  • nut butter
  • Greek yoghurt or skyr
  • maple syrup or honey

Instructions

  • Rinse the oat groats in a fine mesh sieve under cold water and drain well.
  • Add the rinsed oat groats, water, milk, salt, and cinnamon (if using) to the Instant Pot insert. Stir once to combine.
  • Secure the lid and set the valve to sealing. Cook on High Pressure for 20 minutes.
  • When cooking finishes, allow the pressure to release naturally for 15 minutes, then release any remaining pressure.
  • Open the lid and stir the oat groats. The mixture will thicken slightly as it cools.
  • Stir in the chia seeds and allow the oats to rest for 3–5 minutes so the chia can absorb liquid and thicken the porridge.
  • Divide into bowls and top with berries and any optional toppings before serving.

Notes

Flavour variations

  • Apple Cinnamon Oat Groats – Stir in diced apple during the last few minutes of cooking or add sautéed apple and extra cinnamon when serving. A drizzle of maple syrup works well here.
  • Berry Almond Bowl – Top the cooked oats with mixed berries, toasted almonds, and a spoonful of almond butter for added richness and texture.
  • Nutty Banana Oats – Add sliced banana and peanut butter just before serving. A small pinch of nutmeg pairs well with this variation.

Substitutions

  • Milk – The milk can be replaced entirely with water or any plant-based milk. Using half milk and half water creates a creamier texture while reducing the risk of scorching in the pressure cooker.
  • Chia seeds – If you don’t have chia seeds, flaxseed or hemp seeds can be stirred in after cooking for extra fibre and texture.
Oat groats are naturally vegan, dairy-free (if plant milk is used), and gluten-free, though those with gluten sensitivities should choose certified gluten-free oats.

Storage

Cooked oat groats keep well in the refrigerator for up to 5 days in an airtight container. To reheat, add a splash of milk or water and warm gently on the stove or in the microwave.
